Sometimes, the things our dogs find interesting can be the things we least expect.
One of our beloved daycare regulars, Mr. P, recently gave his mom, Michelle Williams, quite a scare—and his experience is an important reminder for every pet parent.
It started when Michelle noticed that Mr. P was having trouble with his bowel movements. Knowing something wasn’t right, she took him to the veterinarian for an examination.
An X-ray revealed an unexpected culprit: Mr. P had been eating pebbles and rocks from his backyard.
The X-ray showed multiple foreign objects in his stomach. Thankfully, his veterinarian was able to prescribe medication to help move the rocks through his digestive system naturally, allowing Mr. P to avoid immediate surgery.
The result?
Mr. P passed more than 20 rocks!
Thankfully, he is now doing well and has returned to his happy, playful self. We’re so relieved to see him back with his daycare friends! ❤️
🚨 What Every Dog Parent Should Know About Rock Ingestion
Dogs can sometimes eat things that aren’t food including rocks, pebbles, sticks, mulch, and other objects. Repeatedly eating non-food items may be associated with pica, although the cause can vary from dog to dog.
It can sometimes be related to curiosity or boredom, but medical or behavioral factors may also play a role.
Signs to Watch For
If your dog may have swallowed something they shouldn’t have, watch for:
- Difficulty or straining when pooping
- Vomiting or repeated gagging
- Loss of appetite
- Unusual tiredness or lethargy
- Restlessness or signs of abdominal discomfort
- Changes in normal bathroom habits
How to Help Keep Your Pup Safe
1. Check your yard.
Look for loose rocks, gravel, mulch, or other small objects your dog could pick up and swallow.
2. Watch what your dog picks up.
If your pup suddenly develops a habit of chewing or eating objects they normally ignore, pay attention and redirect them.
3. Provide safe alternatives.
Safe chew toys, exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation can help keep curious pups occupied.
4. Act quickly.
If you suspect your dog has swallowed a rock or another foreign object, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Some foreign objects can cause serious complications, and prompt veterinary attention can make a difference.
